In late 1971, two years after the Stonewall riots in New York sparked the modern gay rights movement in America, and twelve months before LIFE ceased publishing as a weekly, the magazine featured an article on “gay liberation” that, seen a full 40 years later, feels sensational, measured and somehow endearingly, deeply square all at the same time.

I have feelings. I am a greatly in favour of female!John, and Asianfemale!John is pretty phenomenal for visibility of women and non-white Americans in primetime television. But I can’t get over the fact that it doesn’t have any Victorian trappings that lie at the heart of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

The NYPD doesn’t quite have the same dynamic as Scotland Yard or NSY. From this tiny preview, Elementary’s police force looks like it’ll have more of a CSI (CSI, CSI: NY or CSI: Miami), Dexter or Psych feel than what ACD canon has given us to expect. And of course, the open hostility of the detective is very Doakes from Dexter, or Lassiter from Psych without the friendliness. I just hope that won’t be the focus of the show. Obviously, they have taken many cues from BBC’s brilliant Sherlock. I suppose it would be hard to write an acerbic, witty Holmes in many other ways, but let’s hope they skirt away from producing a pale imitation of Benedict Cumberbatch’s role.

I’m still interested to see how this will play out. I hope they’ll respect the audience and write scripts and cases that are challenging and intelligent. And maybe it’ll convince the few unconverted about the magnificence of ACD’s work!
