Putting the Sci in Torchwood’s Sci-Fi

Would the Flynn Effect mean that Jack Harkness and John Hart are smarter than your ordinary 21st century humans? This would also be true of any other member of advanced societies in the Whoniverse.

I’ve read some fic in which Ianto mopes about his impending death, for the average lifespan of a Torchwood employee is x number of years and he just so happens to be nearing that. However, life expectancy of a Torchwood employee is probably best modelled by the exponential distribution. This would hold true so long as an overwhelming majority of employees perish of unnatural causes, and the probability of one encountering a fatal situation remains relatively constant throughout the duration of one’s employment. Therefore, I postulate that because of the memoryless property of the exponential distribution, Ianto and the rest of the team should worry less as they near the mean life expectancy. They should instead focus on decreasing probability of fatality and live each day as their last.
This goes to show: go at it, boys.
